What to See and Do on Mykonos: Ultimate Highlights

Mykonos is a famous Greek island in the Cyclades that attracts big crowds of tourists and celebrities year after year. Also referred to as the “Ibiza of Greece,” it is famous for its vibrant atmosphere, beautiful beaches, and lively nightlife. We enjoyed spending over a week on Mykonos, even though, to be completely honest, Mykonos did not make the shortcut to our favorite Greek islands. Nevertheless, it is an enchanting island with whitewashed houses, narrow streets, and iconic windmills that is worth a visit.

Chora (Mykonos Town)

sellMust-see towns and villages

The absolute highlight of the island is the capital of Mykonos, Chora, also known as Mykonos Town. It is a picturesque town with narrow streets, whitewashed houses, and colorful doors and windows. Explore the charming maze-like streets, visit the iconic windmills, and enjoy the lively atmosphere of the town’s shops, restaurants, and bars. Chora is a perfect spot for shopping as well. There are numerous options, from cute shops selling handmade and artsy stuff to high-end designer shops.

Little Venice

Located in Mykonos Town, Little Venice is a charming waterfront district with colorful houses built right on the water’s edge. It offers stunning views of the sea and is a perfect spot to enjoy a romantic sunset. We loved walking in this charming part of Mykonos town. It makes for a delightful spot for candlelight dinners and sweet moments with your partner.

Beaches

Mykonos is famous for its beautiful beaches with crystal-clear waters and golden sand. Only for this reason, I would prefer traveling to Mykonos as opposed to Santorini. Some popular beaches include Paradise Beach, Super Paradise Beach, Ornos Beach, and Psarou Beach. These beaches offer various amenities, beach clubs, water sports, and a vibrant party scene. While visiting Ornos Beach, make sure to explore Ornos town as well. It is a cute village, where we decided to stay to experience the local life as opposed to staying in a big resort.

Windmills of Mykonos

The iconic windmills are one of the most recognizable landmarks of Mykonos. Located on a hill near Mykonos Town, they provide a panoramic view of the town and the sea. They are particularly enchanting at sunset but be prepared to share this delightful experience with other island visitors.

Delos island

The visit to this sacred island was the highlight of the whole trip for us. Just a short boat ride from Mykonos, Delos is an ancient archaeological site and a UNESCO World Heritage site. It is considered one of the most important mythological, historical, and archaeological sites in Greece. Take a 30-minute boat ride and explore the ancient ruins, including temples, houses, and statues, and learn about the island’s rich history.

God Apollo and Goddess Artemis are said to have been born on Delos, which rendered the island sacred, and no one was allowed to be born or die on the island.

Panagia Paraportiani

This iconic church in Chora (Mykonos town) is a unique architectural masterpiece. Comprising five small chapels, it is a popular spot for photography and a symbol of Mykonos. Check it out while wandering in Chora.

Water Sports and Activities

Mykonos offers a range of water sports and activities for adventure enthusiasts. You can enjoy activities such as jet skiing, windsurfing, scuba diving, and sailing. It is yet another lovely Greek island, that can become your next exciting holiday destination if you are into delicious food, hospitable locals, and stunning beaches.

Conclusion

These are just a few highlights of Mykonos, and the island has much more to offer in terms of dining, nightlife, and exploring its unique culture and traditions. What I love most about Mykonos and Greece, in general, are the locals and their kind-hearted hospitality.
