Highlights of Shanghai

Shanghai is a vibrant and dynamic city with a rich blend of traditional and modern attractions.


Interesting backstory: I did my Master’s in Teaching Chinese in Suzhou, a charming city around 100 km from Shanghai. And I traveled extensively in Shanghai. So, both Suzhou and Shanghai are like home to me.


Shanghai is one of the biggest cities in the world. It is a global financial center and a bustling hub of culture, commerce, and innovation. Unlike any other Chinese city, Shanghai is a must-see for all those who find a unique blend of history, traditions, and ultra-modern architecture fascinating. The Iconic Bund

The first and probably the most famous attraction of Shanghai is the Bund. This iconic waterfront area along the Huangpu River is famous for its stunning skyline views, featuring a juxtaposition of historic European-style buildings on one side and modern skyscrapers on the other. Expect huge crowds in the evenings and at the weekends.

Lujiazui Skyline

Located across the river from The Bund, Lujiazui is the second attraction you cannot miss. Lujiazui is home to some of Shanghai’s most impressive skyscrapers, including the Shanghai Tower, Jin Mao Tower, and World Financial Center (more about the World Financial Center below). The views from observation decks in these towers are breathtaking, especially at sunset.

Yu Garden

Tip: Watch out for scammers who approach you trying to sell luxurious watches and bags for ridiculously low prices. As elsewhere in the world, use your common sense and decline their pushy offers politely.

If you are interested in experiencing traditional Chinese water towns, take a day trip to Zhujiajiao, which is known for its picturesque canals, ancient bridges, and historic architecture. Zhujiajiao Water Town is located about 50 km from Shanghai.

Shanghai World Financial Center Observation Deck

For an incredible panoramic view of the city, visit the observation deck of the Shanghai World Financial Center. It is especially spectacular at night when the city lights up.

Soaring 474 meters above the ground, the observation deck on the 100th floor provides a spectacular view of downtown Shanghai and the Huang Pu River below. There is also an observation bridge on the 97th floor, where you will feel like floating in midair. On the 94th floor, you will find yet another observatory that offers a breathtaking backdrop for exhibitions and glamorous events.


Important info: The business hours at Shanghai World Financial Center Observation Deck are from 11:00 to 21:00. Note that the last admission is at 20:00.
